For dedicated eclipse-chasers, a very nice time period has almost arrived! There are always at least two solar eclipses every year, but that does not at all mean that there will be two excellent total eclipses every year. In fact, many of these can be partials-only, and, unfortunately, even if some are total eclipses, they can more likely than not be practically inaccessible. A good example of this occurs in 2015 on March 20. There is a total eclipse that passes northward between Greenland and Iceland toward the north pole, never touching either Greenland or Iceland. That is impractical, particularly in March. Therefore, when there is a period like the 1970s, with a grouping of four accessible total solar eclipses in five years, that is to be taken advantage of! In the slideshow below, detailed maps and recommended site information are provided to assist you in chasing any or all of these eclipses. The eclipses being referred to are those that will occur in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. The 2017 eclipse is considered so important that it is not in this slideshow … it has its own dedicated slideshow that is accessed using another button. The additional total eclipse of 2024 is added to this slideshow, as it will be another great USA total eclipse that comes just seven years after the 2017 USA eclipse.
