Mt. Kilimanjaro is a spectacular attraction on the border between Tanzania and Kenya. The base of the mountain is about 150 minutes drive east of Arusha, and about 100 minutes from Kilimanjaro airport, where most visitors arrive. You can drive up the mountain on fairly good roads past banana and coffee plantations. The road ends at the trailheads (such as Machame) where climbers normally stay for a week or more to prepare and conduct their climb. This is at about 6000 to 7000 feet of altitude. If the clouds cooperate, you will have some fantastic views of the mountain and its glaciers from the trailhead location. There are fine accommodations, such as a Protea Lodge, along these trailhead roads that provide great views of the mountain.
