The region of northwest China north of Dunhuang to the border with Mongolia is another fairly desolate area, with some isolated cities. It is a sandy, rocky and sometimes mountainous region, with large distances between cities. Two of those cities are Hami and Balikun (Barkol). The area north of the Karlik Tagh mountains and the Barkol grasslands toward Santanghu and on to the border with Mongolia is very desolate; almost uninhabited, with only an occasional Yurt seen. It is amazing how eclipse paths find these areas on the earth!
