This total eclipse of the sun occurred on November 13-14, 2012 (it crossed the International Date Line) and the path of totality passed over the northern tip of Australia. then out over the Coral Sea south of New Caledonia. From there it continued over open water in the southern Pacific ocean. It was observed aboard the Holland-America cruise ship Oosterdam southwest of New Caledonia. On the way to the eclipse viewing location in the Coral Sea, the eastern seaboard of Australia was visited. Significant clouds were encountered in the Coral Sea on eclipse morning (this was a morning eclipse near Australia). There were holes in the clouds, however, and luckily more than half of the eclipse was visible through one of those holes. Following the eclipse, the islands of New Caledonia, Lifou and Ilse de Pins were visited. Following the eclipse cruise a week was spent touring Sydney and its environs, as well as the beautiful Blue Mountains area.
