The area of western China from Golmud to Dunhuang is very desolate. This high region of the extended Tibetan plateau has a rugged beauty, with deep canyons, some sand dunes, but very few towns or factories. Dunhuang is the gateway to the Gobi desrt. As one of the old silk road key cities, Dunhuang has many outstanding attractions for travelers, including the Singing Sand Dunes, Crescent Moon Lake and the famous Mogao Grotto Caves. It is a fairly large city, with many fine accommodations and restaurants, such as the Silk Road Hotel. Airline service is available during the summer months only.
